The Southern Maryland Junior Miss Scholarship
Program is an official preliminary of America's Junior Miss (AJM), the
oldest and largest scholarship program for high school junior females
of its type.
AJM promotes education and excellence in all areas of life. Unlike
beauty pageants, AJM encourages young women to be confident in who they
are and to strive to reach their goals and become successful leaders
in our communities. AJM has established a unique system to evaluate
contestants in the categories of Scholastics, Interview, Talent, Fitness,
and Self-expression. Since 1958, AJM has awarded more than $90
million in cash scholarships and provided thousands of young women with
college granted scholarships to colleges and universities across the
nation. In addition to providing scholarships, AJM challenges
each participant to share its national outreach program, Be Your Best
Self (BYBS), with young people across the nation. Through BYBS,
Junior Misses encourage self esteem and excellence in all young people
through the program's five principles: Be healthy, Be Involved, Be Studious,
Be Ambitious, and Be Responsible.
The minimum requirements for participation are:
1. Junior in High School
2. Minimum of a 3.3 GPA.
3. U.S. Citizen
This local program is for young ladies in their junior year of high
school (i.e. those who will graduate high school in 2011). If
you are graduating in 2011, you are eligible to participate in the program
this year. If not, still, please let me know when you will be
graduating, and I will ensure that you are contacted for your respective
graduating year.
Now on to more details!!
- We are planning to have a training session for this program on Saturday,
January 23rd (all day - and we'll update you on the times) at which
you will learn the physical fitness routine, the opening number, and
will have training sessions on interview, self expression, and cosmetics. Please
check your availability for this day as well!

- FORMS - Their are links below to the forms that you need to
fill out in order to participate in the program. Please fill
out the health form and have it signed by your doctor!
- The scholastic form is a little more time consuming, so please
start it NOW! Academic Form A needs to be signed by a parent
at the top and then both Academic form A and B need to be taken to
the guidance counselor at school. These forms need to be MAILED
by the guidance counselor to the Jaycee Center. The form CANNOT
be given to the student to return to the Jaycees.
- The guidance counselors will need to fill in as much as they can
from the students scholastic history. For our program, the girls
do not need to have completed the PSAT, SAT or ACT exams. However,
this will be a requirement for the State and/or National Program.
- If the school's transcripts provide the information that is requested
on the forms, the guidance counselor may opt to print the transcript,
mark it official and staple it to the forms instead of filling in
all the academic information.
- Should any information be missing or not completed, it will be
assumed by the Scholastic Judges that the student did not complete
the requirement and points could be deducted from their scholastic
score.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that the guidance counselors complete as much
as they can for the student.
Mail forms to:

ATTN: Elsa Ault
